At the end of the Civil War the British government issued land grants to a group of British Loyalists, and the sparse population of The Bahamas tripled in a few years. Six-hundred refugees from New York founded Carleton, the first Loyalist settlement in the islands on Great Abaco near the present-day resort of Treasure Cay.
They envisioned their town would become King Cotton of the Caribbean and, for a few years, their dream came true. The Abaco Islands' economy boomed and the population grew to more than 2,000. But soon the bloom was off the cotton blossom and fields failed within a few years because of pests and soil depletion. Most of the settlers moved away, leaving a population of 400 on the islands by the end of the century -- 200 white planters and 200 black slaves. The fifty-fifty ratio has held steady to this day. The Abaco Islands have five times more white residents per capita than The Islands Of The Bahamas as a whole.
In the 1800s, The Abaco Islands took on an almost New England character as fishing, wooden boatbuilding and "wrecking" -- salvaging damaged ships while they were sinking -- became the mainstays of the local economy. It took nearly a century for the boatbuilding industry to strip the island of its hardwoods, and today only two firms carry on the tradition. Still, the Loyalist heritage of The Abaco Islands remains strong. Many island residents, commonly called Conky Joes, vehemently opposed Bahamian independence and even tried to secede from The Bahamas and form their own British colony. Descendants of the original settlers even went to England to solicit the support of Queen Elizabeth II, but their efforts were rebuffed.
The Bahamas Plantation life was finished after the emancipation of remaining slaves in 1834. By the early 1840s many residents had left the Bahama's and setteled in Florida, particularly in the Keys. Those that remained in the Bahamas frequently traveled to Florida and sometimes set up fishing camps in the Palm Beach County Island (Singer Island).
1830 Census - Dade County has not been created yet. See St. Johns County, the parent of Dade County. You will find that North River is the southern most town on the census, which is well north of the present day Palm Beach County. There are 15 familes listed on the North River Census. All of them are slave owners.
1840 Census - The 1840 census for Dade County includes 93 households. There are no towns listed - the entire county is lumped together.

Fort Dallas: Fort Dallas was established on the plantation of William English in 1836 as an United States military post and cantonment in southern Florida during the Seminole Wars. Fort Dallas remained in Union hands during the American Civil War and was abandoned afterward. In 1891, Julia Tuttle brought her family to live in a large home on the Miami River that had been in use when Fort Dallas occupied the spot. Tuttle repaired and converted the home into one of the show places in the area with a sweeping view of the river and Biscayne Bay. In 1895, following the successful efforts of Tuttle and fellow landowner William Brickell to attract a railroad, Fort Dallas was part of the site of the new city of Miami, Florida when Henry M. Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railway south from Palm Beach.
Indian Key: In 1836, Indian Key became the first county seat for Dade County. At that time, this tiny island was the site of a lucrative business-salvaging cargo from shipwrecks in the Florida Keys.
Key Vacas (Marathon): In the early 1800s, Marathon was settled by a group of Bahamians and several families from Mystic, Connecticut involved in fishing. In the 1820s, a small group of wreckers moved in and Key Vaca became known as one of the first three settlements in the Keys, along with Key West and Indian Key. The Bahamians were there to farm the land and produced sea island cotton as well as several different types of fruits.
